Saying Goodbye to a Friend

Today we said goodbye, for now, to our friend Carlos Contreras. It’s never easy, saying goodbye to someone, especially someone who was selfless with their time, their talents, their life.

If you’ve never met Carlos, you missed out. He was always a commanding presence when out on the court or the sidelines. He would take the time to talk to everyone. He would mentor not only his students but everyone that would come to him.

At San Eli News, we can remember the first time we had an actual conversation with Carlos. You could see his passion for every kid out there on the basketball court that night. When we told him that was the reason we were out there, for the kids and nothing more, he smiled and said, “thank you.”

We may have said goodbye to Carlos, but his love, his legacy will continue. His wife, Josefina, is equally loving and caring. Like her husband, she is there for you, no matter what the need is.

Carlos and Josefina have three amazing daughters. Each one the product of a home filled with love, care and concern for others, and a drive to help others be the best they can: Camilla, Catarina and Maya will carry on in their father’s footsteps.

Carlos, we will miss you.

Join us in this prayer:

Father of all, we pray to you for Carlos Contreras, and for all those whom we love but see no longer. Grant to them eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. May his soul and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

If you like, please share a memory you have of Carlos in the comment secion below. We would love to read your memories and thoughts.

In the coming days, we will be featuring a celebration of Carlos. Stay tuned.

Before you look at the photos below or watch the video of when Camilla signed to play college ball, we ask you to take the time to make to donation, via the GoFundMe set up by the Contreras family. They’ve always been there for us – let’s be there for them.

  1. The Lord bless you
    and keep you;
    the Lord make his face shine on you
    and be gracious to you;
    the Lord turn his face toward you
    and give you peace. —Numbers 6:24-26
